Thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. (Deuteronomy 6:6-7)

Millions of Americans rise up every morning and homeschool, answering a call from Sinai issued more than 3,500 years ago. The call goes deeper as we study the words in Scripture. There were two elements of the Sinai covenant, the word and the “writing of God” (Ex 32:16). God gave law to a lawless nation and literacy to an illiterate one. The call from Sinai is not only a command to teach and study the word but to “write” (Deut 6:9) and to “read” it (Deut 31:11). It is clear that Sinai was a teaching covenant (Ex 24:12) intended to teach the law and letters.

Deeper still, since the letters were also numbers, it was not only a literacy covenant but also a numeracy covenant. Believers were called to learn mathematics: “thou… shalt number them” (Num 1:3), “take ye the sum” (Num 1:2), “and divide” (Num 31:27), “thou shalt take one portion of fifty” (Num 31:30), “and ye shall measure” (Num 35:5), and multiply, and use the calendar, and divide things into fractions, and apportion, and survey, and many other mathematical endeavors. It was a dizzying acceleration of learning, considering God’s people were utterly devoid of law and letters and numbers at that time. They were starting from scratch like our own children.

Above all, the call at Sinai is about commitment to God’s purpose of learning, preserving, and passing on knowledge to our children and others. It was about all believers achieving their God-given potential. “Thou shalt be perfect with the Lord thy God” (Deut 18:13). God made your child with nearly unlimited potential! We call this measure of potential the Godly Yardstick.  It is what we strive to achieve with accelerated learning - guided by the values of commitment, family, free will, and the vision of our God-given potential.

Whether your children are exclusively homeschooled, or attend public or private school during the day, you have taken the responsibility of your child's spiritual and academic education upon yourself. It is a great responsibility, but you are not alone. We are here to help you.
